Prerequisites for Android Connectivity
Before Windows can communicate with your device for ADB or Fastboot tasks, you must enable developer features on your phone:
- Open Settings and navigate to About phone.
- Tap Build number seven times to activate Developer options.
- Return to Settings, navigate to System > Developer options, and toggle USB debugging to On.
Methods for Obtaining the Google USB Driver
You can acquire the necessary driver files using one of the following approaches:
1. Manual Download
If you prefer a standalone installation, download the driver package directly:
- Navigate to the official Android developer website.
- Locate the driver download section.
- Accept the terms and click the DOWNLOAD button to save the ZIP file to your computer.
2. Android Studio SDK Manager
For those already utilizing Android Studio, the internal manager is the most efficient update path:
- Launch Android Studio.
- Navigate to Tools > SDK Manager.
- Locate SDK Tools and check the box for Google USB Driver.
- Click OK to finalize the installation.
Installing the Driver via Device Manager
After acquiring the files, use the Windows Device Manager to associate them with your hardware:
- Press
Windows + R, typedevmgmt.msc, and hit Enter. - Locate your device under the Portable Devices or Other Devices category.
- Right-click the device entry and select Update driver.
- Select Browse my computer for drivers.
- Point the installer to the folder where you extracted the downloaded driver files and select Next to complete the process.
